Oven Fueled By Garbage, Saves Trees

kenya-oven.jpg

Oven fueled by garbage is now in the works in Kenya. The center of the oven is equipped with a superheated steel plate that vaporizes drops of water. Oxygen released then burns discarded oil from vehicles making it heat up to 930 Fahrenheit. To maintain the high heat, garbage is used.

Residents use the oven to cook meals or make hot water for washing. The obvious benefit is that it reduces waste in the area, which solves a devastating problem that destroyed much of Kenya’s plains.

Being the first of its kind, the same concept has caught on quickly and there are plans for 20 more. The oven was built with the help of the United Nations Environment Program $10,000 grant.
