Doing your laundry can actually have a very large impact on the amount of energy used in your home. According to the Department of Energy, the clothes dryer alone is the second biggest hog of household energy.
A product scheduled to be released later this year is supposed to dramatically decrease the percentage of energy used to dry clothes. Technology by Dryer Miser is supposed to dry garments up to 41 percent more quickly with no shrinkage or stink from the odor of burnt lint. Kits to be sold at $300, the President Michael Brown says that they could be added to existing dryers in only 20 minutes by a technician. While not all the dryers on the market can be converted, up to 40 percent can be.
The key ingredient to getting the clothes quicker with the kit is utilizing a system that involves liquid. Brown’s copper and aluminum system heats a fluid which mixes with the air and is then blow hot into the clothing drum. Each unit would use approximately 3 cups of the non-toxic hydrocarbon-based oil, and unlike most natural gas dryers, no carbon dioxide is emitted.
