Companies like SkySails in Hamburg, Germany are manufacturing kites the size of football fields deployed with a flexible caple. At 1,000 feet above sea level, these kites can catch winds up to 50% stronger than at the surface.
Supporters of the kites, say that captains would be able to throttle back the ship’s diesel engine and slash fuel consumption up to 50 percent in optimal conditions.
The first cargo ship to be fitted with a kites from SkySails is the 460-foot Beluga SkySails owned by the Beluga Group. The SkySails hopes to have more kites ready for the general marketplace in 2008 and equip 1,500 ships with kites by 2015.
